064 - Getting custom with the MADE Bicycle Show
Monday Sep 26, 2022
Monday Sep 26, 2022
If you've been missing the chance to see some of the bicycle world's finest builders display their work, mark your calendars for late summer 2023.
That's when the MADE Bicycle Show debuts, bringing together many of the best-known frame builders, plenty of new and smaller builders, and a curated collection of component brands to an outdoor show in Portland, Oregon.
In this interview I talk with MADE's co-founder Billy Sinkford about the event, how it'll differ from long-time fan faves like NAHBS and Philly Bike Expo, and what we can expect as both attending media and consumers. If you've been thinking about ordering a custom bike start saving up now and plan on being there to meet them all and find the builder that you connect with.

063 - Are Ceramic Bearings really worth it?
Monday Sep 12, 2022
Monday Sep 12, 2022
Are ceramic bearings really worth it?
How much drag do bearings really produce?
Does the type of grease matter? Or is it faster to use no grease at all? What about removing the seals?
In this episode, I interview Matt Harvey with Enduro Bearings, and he answers all of those questions…and a WHOLE LOT MORE!
This is one of my favorite episodes ever because there's a lot here that surprised me, and I learned a ton about bearings. We dive so deep about materials, what really causes friction, and why some marketing claims are very likely be too good to be true.
We also talk about how you can immediately improve the performance of any bearing on any bike, straight out of the box, even if your bike, hubs, or bottom bracket are brand new!
Get ready to take notes and set your weekend aside for tinkering!

062 - No22 Cycles explains 3D-printed titanium parts
Friday Sep 02, 2022
Friday Sep 02, 2022
No22 Cycles recently unveiled their gorgeous new 3D printed titanium dropouts, made for them by Silca, and they're just the beginning of what they can do with this manufacturing process.
Besides being gorgeous, there are a lot of functional and economical reasons to use additive manufacturing. In this episode, they explain:
- how the parts are made
- how they're made strong enough
- why they're a better solution than CNC'ing
...and a whole lot more!
Check them out at 22bicycles.com, and our full story about the dropouts for more details.

061 - How Radial Compression works in bicycle wheels
Friday Aug 26, 2022
Friday Aug 26, 2022
Ever wondered what "radial compliance" is in a bicycle wheel?
On this episode, I'm kicking off a mini-series around technologies, products, and designs that are either misunderstood or often tossed into product launch stories without good explanations.
My first topic is radial compliance, which is when a bicycle wheel is able to deform in the vertical plane as you hit a bump or land a drop. It's not nearly as well known as lateral stiffness, which is a wheel's lack of flex from side to side under cornering loads, or even torsional stiffness, which is the wind up a wheel can get under a really hard sprint.
- What is radial compliance in a bicycle wheel?
- Which part of the wheel has the most effect on radial compliance?
- Which rim materials and designs are most compliant?
- How do spoke type and count affect radial compliance?
- How can you tune your own wheels' radial compliance?

060 - Inside the Pro Cycling Manager video game
Friday Jul 01, 2022
Friday Jul 01, 2022
I'm a bit of a video game fan, and obviously a cycling fan, and always a tech fan. So when all three are combined, I get really curious, and Pro Cycling Manager caught my eye. It's been around for years, updated each year with that season's teams and riders, plus a Tour de France edition that mimics that year's route.
But how do they get all of the licensing to use team kits and names, athletes, and events and courses? What's the game play like? The AI and physics and other mechanics? I interview Clement Pinget, one of the developers at Cyanide, the studio behind these games, to get all the answers...

059 - Why Carl Strong quit titanium to focus on carbon
Monday Jun 13, 2022
Monday Jun 13, 2022
Over the years, custom framebuilder Carl Strong has built quite a name and reputation making some of the best handmade bicycles out there while also setting an example for new builders on how to run an actual business. We covered his "retirement" announcement, but wanted to touch base and hear the full story from him and his wife and business partner, Loretta Strong.
In this interview, they share the lessons learned from three decades in the industry, and explain why they're stepping (slowly) away from titanium to focus on Pursuit Cycles.

058 - How Decathlon makes ”pro” budget Rockrider mountain bikes
Friday May 06, 2022
Friday May 06, 2022
Decathlon is a massive sporting goods retailer, equivalent (or larger) than Dick's Sporting Goods here in the States. Packed with very affordable house brand equipment, it raised a few eyebrows when their Rockrider mountain bikes debuted on the UCI World Cup XC race scene.
So we wondered, how are they putting top riders into the fastest races in the world on a bike sold in a "big box" store?
We spoke with the team at Decathlon about the bikes, the engineering and design, and what we can expect from the line in stores and in the near future.
You can check out the prototype hardtail and full suspension race bikes in this post:

057 - Lauf explains the wild new Seigla gravel bike
Monday Apr 11, 2022
Monday Apr 11, 2022
We head to Iceland to ride the all-new Lauf Seigla, an aggressive reinterpretation of what a race gravel bike can be.
With massive 700x57 (29x2.25") tire clearance, more rear compliance, and stiffer leaf spring suspension fork, it's a monster that's also quite fast.
In this interview, we talk with founder and president Benedikt Skulason about the new design, how to hack it to use a dropper seatpost, and the tricks they used to give it so much room for big tires without changing the geometry from the original True Grit frame!

056 - Twisted Spoke explains everything about CBD
Thursday Mar 31, 2022
Thursday Mar 31, 2022
Curious about CBD and its benefits for athletes? What about cyclists in particular? And what about CBG, and CBN? And WADA drug testing?
In this episode, we talk to two avid cyclists who also happen to be the founders of Twisted Spoke CBD. More than just a relabeled me-too brand, Wen and Gabe prove that they are beyond passionate about the health and wellbeing attributes that CBD and its derivatives can offer.
We cover it all, from the differences between CBD, CBG, and CBN; which ones contain THC and why, whether and how that might affect drug testing before or after a race, and so much more. It's a very thorough look at why cyclists may want to try CBD, when and how much to use, and what they can expect from using it.

054 - How Pocket Pedals turns race bikes into commuters
Friday Feb 18, 2022
Friday Feb 18, 2022
Pocket Pedals are a slip-on, hard composite flat pedal surface that turns any road or mountain bike with SPDs into something that's easy to ride around town with regular shoes.
While it looks simple, there's a lot more going on with it to be able to work with SPD-SL road and SPD MTB pedals simultaneously. And don't even get us started on Look's pedals, but those are coming, too.
In this episode, I interview founder Karl Bjornson about how he came up with the idea, the complexities of manufacturing something that's both flexible yet necessarily rigid, and how their distribution is coming along.

053 - How Bridge Bike Works built a carbon bike factory
Monday Feb 07, 2022
Monday Feb 07, 2022
In this episode, I'm chatting with the founders of Bridge Bike Works, an ambitious carbon fiber bike brand starting up in Toronto, Canada.
And when I say ambitious, I mean, they're literally starting EVERYTHING from scratch, there's not a single off the shelf aspect of their entire process, and they're making it all right there at their new factory.
So, what does it take to launch a new bicycle manufacturing plant to also launch your own brand of bike? You're about to find out, along with an explanation of their racy yet capable all road geometry concept, which takes full advantage of bigger tires without sacrificing a whip fast ride.

052 - Why Bentonville is better than your city (for bikes)
Thursday Jan 06, 2022
Thursday Jan 06, 2022
As it happened, I made a last minute trip to Bentonville for the launch of Fezzari's new Signal Peak XC mountain bike. Which happened to coincide with Outerbike and the Big Sugar gravel race. And since I don't like having any downtime whatsoever, I squeezed in an interview with Gary Vernon, who I'll sum up as the orchestrator of all things bike advocacy and infrastructure in Bentonville, Arkansas.
If you haven't been to Bentonville to ride, all I can say is this: When you finally do go, and I do mean WHEN, not IF, your mind will absolutely be blown.
Talking about bike lanes and access and trails is one thing. But seeing how they've made it an integral part of their entire community and city planning is honestly beyond words.
But that doesn't mean we can't try, so if you're at all involved in your city's planning, or your local bike advocacy group, or you just want to hear what's possible and get inspired to make cycling better in your own community, this episode will absolutely open your eyes to what's possible.

051 - How Reddiyo perfects cycling training with A.I.
Monday Nov 01, 2021
Monday Nov 01, 2021
What's up Bikerumor fans!
Today, I'm speaking with the founders of Reddiyo, a smart training app that uses your workout data and performance to algorithmically determine your next workout.
It's an interesting concept not just because it uses data from the workouts you do on the app, but also your past recorded workouts to get you up and running with an effective program from day one.
In this episode, we talk about how they started, some of the technical challenges and opportunities in creating the app, plus a bit about the actual business of creating a subscription based app. We wrap up with a look at features to come and some pie in the sky thinking on future features.
I love hearing the startup stories of bike brands because almost every one of them is a pure passion play. They're started by riders who wanted to do something on their own and saw a gap in the market, then took the leap to create something cool.
Reddiyo's founders not only took a leap of faith, but they went into a category that has some steep competition. But, after using it, I'd say they've managed to create something both interesting and useful, particularly if your focus is more on getting stronger and faster than on just entertaining yourself on the trainer.
If you'd like to try it yourself, you can use promo code BIKERUMOR30 to more than double your free trial period from 14 days to a full 30 days!
Here's to a training smarter not harder.

050 - Lauf Cycles‘ switch to consumer direct & future products
Tuesday Oct 26, 2021
Tuesday Oct 26, 2021
In the 2 years since we've last partied with the Lauf Cycles team, they've switched from IBD to consumer direct, changed up most of their team, and are trying to find a good U.S. headquarters.
They've also been working hard on that full suspension gravel bike that's set to change the landscape, but they don't seem to be in a hurry to launch it.
We asked why, and talked a lot about the rest of the cycling industry, their growth, and future plans.
This one's a very casual conversation, but it's littered with interesting little facts about the bike industry as a whole that are definitely worth waiting for.
This episode is brought to you by 10 Barrel Brewing - If you like beer, and you're on the West Coast, check them out. Not only do they have some great beer, they also put on some rad events at their breweries in Oregon, Colorado, and Idaho!

049 - Giro tells how they mix style with safety
Tuesday Oct 05, 2021
Tuesday Oct 05, 2021
It's one thing to make a helmet look good. Or to make it aerodynamic. And quite another to make it do both.
But when it needs to do all of those things and meet the required safety standards, that's where things get tricky. Fortunately, Giro has a lot of experience, and the man in charge of tying all those pieces together is Rob Wesson. In this episode, we learn how they go from concept sketch to a finished product that not only looks good, but keeps our heads safe...
This is Part 3 of our 3-part series on bicycle helmet designs and features. Check out Part 1, where Kali's founder explains why helmet testing standards are all wrong, and why your helmet really should be a lot softer. And in Part 2, Lazer explains why different head shapes, hairstyles, and even types of riders benefit from different fits and retention mechanisms.

048 - Lazer Helmets has a fit over retention mechs
Friday Oct 01, 2021
Friday Oct 01, 2021
We know, helmet retention systems...yawn. Except, there are so many ways to make them, and so many ways to make them work.
And then there's fit...even helmets from the same brand can have drastically different fits across models. But why?
In this episode, Lazer's longtime US "helmeteer" Chris Smith explains why they use various systems, the pros and cons, and opines on how to get a helmet that fits correctly across head shapes, hairstyles, and more.
This is Part 2 of a 3-part series on bicycle helmet designs and features. Stay tuned for our interview with Giro on design to aerodynamics, and check out Part 1, where Kali's founder explains why helmet testing standards are all wrong, and why your helmet really should be a lot softer.

047 Kali Helmets explains why helmets are too hard
Tuesday Sep 28, 2021
Tuesday Sep 28, 2021
If you think bicycle helmets are designed to be as safe as possible, think again.
The problem isn't the brands...none of the good ones are cutting corners or making false claims.
The problem is the testing...it's unrealistic.
So helmets have to be harder than necessary to pass those tests and get certified to sell. Which is bad news for your brain.
In this episode, Kali Protectives founder Brad Waldron explains how things can be better, and shares how they design around these limitations as best they can to produce softer, safer helmets that can still past CPSC and EN testing.
This is Part 1 of 3 on bicycle helmet designs and features, stay tuned for interviews with Lazer and Giro on everything from fit to retention mechanisms to design to aerodynamics and more.
