024 - Fab Fabricator Danielle Schön of Schön Studio
Tuesday Oct 29, 2019
Tuesday Oct 29, 2019
Canadian builder Danielle Schön is all about growth. Like her colleague and hero, Julie Ann Pedalino, Danielle Schön of Schön Studio is a skill hoarder - she's always looking for new things to learn, master, and add to her evolving toolkit. But where Pedalino's path has lead her to computer aided design and CNC machining to realize her creative vision, Schön has skewed more visceral.
Her constant need for growth and personal development has helped her to build an impressive portfolio of work and technical chops - which she will discuss in detail in the podcast.
As a builder, the exciting thing for me is how she is a top notch fabricator first. Like other builders in this series, because she comes from outside the craft, Schön is freed from the dominant narratives and traditions around what a bike should be. As a result, Schön's solutions and construction can take unexpected and delightful turns. She deeply understands the opportunity of her material and her process - that is her guide.
Check out the full post on Bikerumor.com for gorgeous photos of Schön's custom bicycles!

023 - Framebuilder Jackie Mautner's Breadwinner is Untitled
Thursday Oct 24, 2019
Thursday Oct 24, 2019
By day, Jackie Mautner is the mild-mannered production manager at Breadwinner Cycles, working alongside Tony Pereira and Ira Ryan and honing bread and butter frame building brazing and finishing skills at their secret North Portland production compound/cafe.
But after school? Jackie applies that level of craftsmanship to her side project, Untitled Cycles, a space she has been developing for her own exploration and to make room for collaborations. Coming at cycling and building frames from the perspective of a fine artist and architect (as well as with the experimental flare of a hardcourt bike polo enthusiast), Jackie is not burdened by having to adhere to dominant narratives within cycling that often put a given bicycle style or type in a rigidly defined box.
As a result, Jackie's bikes are really fun to look at and absorb. She plays with levels of fidelity in the holistic structure of the frame, creating moments to appreciate from the dropout and joint level to bilaminate and structural themes that pull lines and detail across the entire frame and bike. Sounds vague? Good. You should be listening to Jackie describe it anyway.
And with that, meet the second builder headed to the Philadelphia Bike Expo as part of the PBExSRAM Framebuilder Inclusivity Scholarship: Jackie Mautner.
She's the new kid in town.

022 - Framebuilder Julie Ann Pedalino outdoes herself
Tuesday Oct 15, 2019
Tuesday Oct 15, 2019
Amongst framebuilders, there are those that other frame builders look up to for inspiration, and gaze upon with admiration. While relatively young in the game, Julie Ann Pedalino's intricate and artful designs truly take bicycle construction to a new level. They're equal parts fun and function, with some absolutely mind-blowing details. And attention to detail. This is one episode you definitely need to click over to the full post on Bikerumor just to check out all the photos of her latest show bikes:

021 - Brooklyn Fowler explains SRAM's Inclusivity Scholarship
Wednesday Oct 09, 2019
Wednesday Oct 09, 2019
This is the second installment in a series of podcast interviews with the folks around the Philadelphia Bike Expo and SRAM Inclusivity Scholarship. In this episode, we chat with one of the key players in bringing this project to be, Brooklyn Fowler of SRAM.
Brooklyn is best described as a powerful undercurrent in an industry that values big waves. They are one of those folks in cycling that you may not know but whose impact you have certainly felt. In addition to being one of the most technically knowledgable folks in the cycling industry in the world, Brooklyn has also been an enthusiastic and passionate advocate for the rider and mechanic experience. They have been a central, though behind-the-scenes, figure in stoking grassroots efforts to facilitate inclusivity in the cycling industry and are an important touchpoint for many.

020 - Bina Bilenky's Philly Bike Expo...for the people!
Friday Sep 27, 2019
Friday Sep 27, 2019
Bina Bilenky is what you would call a real, deal bicycle industry lifer. She grew up sorting, organizing, and cleaning shop at Bilenky Cycle Works, her father's (Stephen) bicycle company. As she grew up, she worked her way through the administrative side of the company, taking orders, keeping things organized and herding Bilenky's famous shop cats, professionally. While traveling around the US promoting Bilenky Cycle Works, Bina and Stephen saw an opportunity for an east coast show, one that would be designed to be a public bicycle exhibition with a deliberately broad-reaching bent.
Thus, the Philadelphia Bike Expowas born - and since year two, the show has been in the very capable hands of show organizer, director, and current owner Bina Bilenky.

019 - Ayesha McGowan shifts the conversation toward more representation
Thursday Aug 29, 2019
Thursday Aug 29, 2019
Ayesha McGowan, also known as A Quick Brown Fox, is the first mainstream African-American female pro cyclist. And she's racing for more than just podium spots...it's about #RepresentationMatters. As the saying goes, just showing up is half the battle, but in her case, being present means having a presence that other people of color can relate to. She lets them envision themselves on the starting line, in the peloton, and, occasionally, on the podium.
In this episode, we talk about why representation, diversity and inclusion matters. Not just in cycling, but of course that's our focus. It's a great conversation, and an important one that we hope you'll listen to all the way through...and then share it with as many friends and cyclists as you can.
You can check out more of Ayesha's videos and podcast, and support her racing via Patreon, from her website. Follow her on Facebook, Twitterand Instagram, or check her blog here.

This is one of our most fun conversation yet!

DeFeet's sales & brand manager, Rob Dickerson, joined us, and we kicked things off with a ride over to Watt's bike shop for a couple beers. Then we all sat down for a roundtable discussion on aero socks, gravel groups, e-bikes and inclusivity, mixing and matching road and mountain bike groups, and a whole lot more. 016 - Silca explains why tariffs are bad
Monday Jul 08, 2019
Monday Jul 08, 2019
Want to know why the trade war with China and its tariffs are only going to send more jobs OUT of America? And why they'll make many of your bikes and components and accessories more expensive without doing anything to stimulate our home economy?
In this episode, Silca founder Josh Poertner tells us how he acquired and has rebuilt the legendary brand before we dive deep into how and why the tariffs are bad for business. There's more to it than you think, and it's created a situation that let's domestic materials suppliers gouge their customers, too. It's bad, but knowledge is power, and after hearing this, you may rethink all those empty promises that come around in the next election cycle.

015 - Shimano's Nick Murdick explains everything
Saturday Jun 15, 2019
Saturday Jun 15, 2019
During the new XT/SLX launch, we sat down with Shimano's North American Mountain Bike Product Manager, Nick Murdick, to discuss all the things. We opened it up to reader questions and got a TON of great ones, and Nick answers them all. And he gives us a complete masterclass on chain lube...you'll leave this knowing more than you ever thought you should about how to properly lube your chain, what to use, and how long it lasts. It's awesome!
Following the interview, we discuss some of other things you were asking about, like Microspline availability and Shimano's apparent problem with online retail pricing (it's not as simple of a fix as you might thing, and we explain why).

Monday May 20, 2019
Monday May 20, 2019
Pivot founder Chris Cocalis has some strong opinions about mountain bike design, and it shows through in the tight tolerances and high precision construction of his bikes. But how and why does he love pressfit bottom brackets so much when they're the bane of many riders' existences? Why does he thing we should be riding smaller frames? Friday May 03, 2019
Ever wonder how some of the biggest brands got to where they are? Or where wide carbon rims came from? Wider tires? Full suspension carbon mountain bikes? In this interview, we sat down with Ibis co-founders Scot Nicol and Hans Heim and just let the tape run. This is without a doubt one of the most interesting interviews you'll ever hear, touching on everything from how Ibis Cycles got started to how so many of the things we ride today from so many brands all came to be. And most of it's from a guy you've probably never heard of, but he's been behind some amazing things!

010 - How Jerome Clementz helped test Zipp 3ZERO MOTO wheels
Friday Apr 26, 2019
Friday Apr 26, 2019
In this episode, Tyler sits down with multi-time EWS world champion Jerome Clementzto discuss how he and other top pro riders were instrumental in testing and designing the new Zipp 3ZERO MOTO mountain bike wheels. We dive deep, and Jerome doesn't miss a beat explaining the entire testing process, what worked and what didn't, and how the entire test program works to ensure Zipp ended up with a wheel that would withstand a season of World Cup level racing, but still be comfortable and practical for everyday riders like us. There's just a bit of static here and there, but bear with us, the interview's worth it.
We also discuss the mindset required to race, how he trained to stay at the top, and why he retired from enduro racing. Watts had the week off, so Zach joined Tyler to discuss how we test products at Bikerumor, what we're thinking when we head into a product launch, and other aspects of reviewing new components. Lastly, we talk about why single-wall fat bike rims aren't really the same as what Zipp launched.

Friday Apr 19, 2019
Friday Apr 19, 2019
Legendary frame builder Carl Strong says there is no such thing as a gravel bike. Or, rather, any bike can be a gravel bike. It all starts with tire selection. From there he explains how the rest of the bike's geometry falls into place and what you need to consider when choosing the right drop bar bike for your riding style. Whether it's road, all-road, gravel, or touring, Carl explains what the geometry numbers mean and how they affect a bike's handling.
